Tennessee Pharmacists Association

A fundamental role of the Tennessee Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) is to advance the practice of health-system pharmacy across the state. One strategy TSHP elected leadership is embracing is the advancement of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)/ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI). As you are probably aware, PPMI is a major effort by ASHP and the ASHP Foundation to advance pharmacy practice in the nation’s hospitals and health systems. Click here to read the consensus of the ASHP PPMI Summit.

The TSHP executive committee and an ad hoc working group have been evaluating what PPMI means for Tennessee, and the bottom line is that we need your help! To advance practice, each hospital in Tennessee must understand opportunities for improvement, and we must have a view of pharmacy practice across the state.

A key PPMI resource is the web-based Hospital Self-Assessment (HSA) tool and a corresponding action plan, both developed by ASHP and in use in other states across the US. The tool will help you organize the many components of PPMI into an action plan by identifying gaps in hospital pharmacy practices compared to the recommendations from the ASHP PPMI Summit. Completing the HSA will help hospitals quickly identify opportunities to improve and expand pharmacy services. We are asking that someone from every hospital in Tennessee completes the HSA.

So far, only about 5% of Tennessee hospitals have completed the assessment tool, but in other states, 50% or more of hospitals have completed it. We are taking a phased approach, and our goal is to have 40 more Tennessee hospitals complete the PPMI HSA by February 15, 2014.

To complete the HSA, please follow the link below. It will take approximately 45 minutes for you to complete the HSA and corresponding action plan. We encourage you to engage your staff in completing the assessment to ensure the response accurately reflects your institution’s current practice. You are able to print the assessment to discuss with others and return to the website to submit the answers. Anyone at a hospital can complete the PPMI HSA, but only one can be counted as the official response.

Please click here to complete the PPMI Hospital Self-Assessment (HSA) as soon as possible. These data will help your hospital improve, and aggregate data will guide TSHP’s efforts. As we have more data submitted, we will compile and report the data back to you.
