LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Pharmacists

  • Describe legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacist-led POCT.
  • Recognize the clinical indications and symptom profiles of common respiratory illnesses and strep.
  • Interpret sensitivity, specificity, and positive-predictive value to guide clinical decision-making.
  • Initiate treatment protocols based on positive POCT results, aligned with IDSA guidelines and state-specific scope.
  • Collaborate with providers, payers, and public health to optimize test-and-treat models.

Pharmacy Technicians

  • Identify the steps in a standardized POCT workflow including patient intake, consent, and documentation.
  • Describe proper specimen collection and handling techniques for CLIA-waived tests.
  • Recognize the storage, inventory, and quality control requirements of common POCT supplies and devices.
  • Support pharmacist-led services by preparing testing kits, maintaining documentation, and ensuring compliance. 
  • Assist in billing documentation to streamline POCT operations and ensure accurate reimbursement.

PRESENTER

Dr. Jessica M. Robinson, PharmD, is an Assistant Professor at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. A graduate of ETSU, she completed advanced post-graduate fellowships at the University of North Carolina focused on community pharmacy practice and interprofessional geriatrics. She leads the Greater Appalachian Transformation Effort, part of the national Flip the Pharmacy® initiative, working with over 100 pharmacies in Appalachia to implement practice transformation. Dr. Robinson also serves as the lead facilitator for CPESN® Tennessee and is president of the First District Pharmacists Association.

At Gatton, Dr. Robinson teaches about expanding clinical services in community pharmacy and precepts students in practice transformation and residency programs. She is a co-investigator on a $500,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Health supporting point-of-care testing through ETSU’s Academic Health Sciences Center. Her professional interests include rural health, community pharmacy management, and interprofessional geriatrics care.
